Alan N. Mayer, MD, PhD

Pediatric Gastroenterologist

Alan N. Mayer, MD, PhD, is guided by a single principle – the patient comes first. He partners with parents and caregivers to meet the unique needs of every child he sees. Dr. Mayer takes a broad view of a child’s digestive health, taking into account family, school and community when needed to formulate a plan. He makes every effort to educate parents and caregivers so that all parties feel included in the child’s care.

As a pediatric gastroenterologist, Dr. Mayer provides digestive health care for infants, children and young adults with disorders such as abdominal pain, celiac disease, constipation, cyclic vomiting syndrome, eosinophilic esophagitis, gastroesophageal reflux, inflammatory bowel disease including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome, liver disease, malnutrition/failure to thrive and tube feeding support. He is skilled in performing upper endoscopy, colonoscopy and PEG tube (G-tube) placement in infants, children and young adults.

Dr. Mayer earned his medical degree at Weill-Cornell Medical College in New York, New York, where he was biomedical fellow of the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD program. He completed his residency at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Pennsylvania and his fellowship at Boston Children’s Hospital/Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Dr. Mayer is board certified in both general pediatrics and pediatric gastroenterology. He is a member of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation (CCF) and the North American Society For Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (NASPGHAN).

In 2017 and 2018, Dr. Mayer received the honor of being named among Milwaukee’s Top Doctors by Milwaukee Magazine. Additionally, Dr. Mayer is a nationally recognized researcher, having led a team through a landmark study using cutting-edge DNA sequencing, one of the first of its kind in the world, which saved the life of a child. This incredible achievement was featured in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Journal Sentinel article, “One in a Billion.”
